Read →Penguin Colony is a cosmic horror game about being a penguin while two human expeditions tear themselves apart in the Antarctic. It launches on 16 October 2026 for PC and Nintendo Switch 2, and a free demo has been playable on Steam since 4 June 2026. This site covers what the demo actually lets you do, what the launch changes, and how to keep your footing on ice that is watched by something older than the people walking on it.
The setting is 1939, two years after H.P. Lovecraft died. The Nazis and the Kaitiaki are both heading for the same thing under the ice: one group to take its power, the other to put it back to sleep for another hundred years. You cannot influence any of that. Your whole toolkit is sliding, swimming, waddling, and the patience to stand still and watch.
Before you set off
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Learn the stamina ring first | It only drains on climbs; flat ice and water are free |
| Pick a small penguin for gaps | A baby penguin fits through fences an adult cannot |
| Find the base camp early | It is the demo's centrepiece and your best landmark |
| Turn the narration up | The voice carries the story; the wind fights it |
Straight answers
- Is it out yet? No. It releases 16 October 2026 at 10am PT; the free demo is out now.
- Is there combat? None. You observe, you flee, and you survive what you see.
- Is there a map? No map screen. Navigation is done with landmarks, which the navigation guide explains properly.
- How much is it? Pricing had not been announced at the time of the studio's launch post; the editions page tracks what is confirmed.
Where to start reading
If you have not played the demo, begin with the beginner guide for the first hour, then the demo walkthrough for the order the set pieces arrive in. If you have already wandered the ice and want the systems explained, go straight to penguin species and stamina and movement. And if you came here for the story rather than the routes, the factions page and the influences page are the two that explain what you saw.

Every page here was checked against the Steam store, the studio's announcements and the demo's own discussion threads on 13 October 2026.
